Defeat of Russian invaders in Yarysh-Mardy on April 16, 1996 (video)

*** On April 16, 1996, in Chechnya's Shatoi district, near the village of Yarysh -Mardy, Chechen Mujahideen under the command of Emir Khattab defeated a column of the Russian 245 motorized infantry regiment. Russian invaders recognized a loss of 80 soldiers and officers killed and 60 wounded. Actually, some 200 occupiers and more than 30 pieces of military equipment, mainly the BMPs, were destroyed.

We can not say that this event was extraordinary for those days. What was unusual was the spread of the information on the destruction of the column by Russian media that have always suppressed large casualties among their troops. All-Russia's mourning was declared.

It is noteworthy that 2 weeks before the defeat at Yarysh-Mardy, units of Chechen Mujahideen of Shamil Basayev defeated a significantly larger convoy in Vedeno district, in the gorge of River Khul-Khulo, killing several hundred of Russian elite special forces and destroying dozens of pieces of military equipment. Nobody from the Russian media said a single word about this military operation.

The reason for the recognition of the casualties near Yarysh-Mardy was that in the convoy 245 regiment, there were soldiers drafted from one area - Moscow environs. So, hiding the losses was not possible.

In addition, Moscow tried to use these losses for its propaganda purposes. On April 19, 1996, leaders of western countries came to Yeltsin in Moscow for a summit, and the Kremlin decided to demonstrate how "the Russian people continued to suffer from Chechen terrorists".
