G7 to impose new sanctions on Russia
4/26/2014 12:57:34 PM

The leaders of the Group of Seven (US, Germany, Japan, Britain, France, Italy and Canada) major economies agreed on Saturday to swiftly impose further sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine crisis, reports Reuters. At the same time the statement said that the G7 is ready for a diplomatic resolution of the crisis in Ukraine.

"While we continue to prepare to move to broader, coordinated sanctions, including sectoral measures should circumstances warrant, as we committed to in The Hague on March 24, we underscore that the door remains open to a diplomatic resolution of this crisis", said in the statement. Its authors urge "Russia to join them in committing to that path".

Earlier it was reported that the US is ready to announce new sanctions against the "friends of Putin" on Monday.

"We have now agreed that we will move swiftly to impose additional sanctions on Russia", the document says. Its authors claim that "given the urgency of securing the opportunity for a successful and peaceful democratic vote next month in Ukraine's presidential elections, we have committed to act urgently to intensify targeted sanctions and measures to increase the costs of Russia's actions".

On Friday, State Department spokesman Jen Psaki said the United States and Europe share a common approach to the implementation of the Geneva agreements on the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. According to her, these issues, including the preparation of additional sanctions against Russia, US Secretary of State John Kerry discussed in a telephone conversation with the foreign ministers of Britain, Canada and Italy, as well as with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.

According Psaki, discussions showed that "the United States and Europe take a common position" on the situation around Ukraine. "We are closely coordinating our efforts, including steps that can make Russia pay additional costs", said the State Department spokesman, referring to the preparation of new sanctions.

Earlier Friday, the US administration announced "readiness to impose targeted sanctions against Russia regarding its latest actions towards Ukraine". This announcement released by the White House after a telephone conversation between President Barack Obama, French president, German chancellor and prime ministers of the UK and Italy. It is expected that the US sanctions list will include 15 persons as being involved in the situation in Ukraine.

The United States is working with its allies so that the next round of sanctions against Moscow will put more pain on the Russian economy, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said on Friday.

"We are working with our international partners to make sure that when we do it, we do it in an effective way", Lew told Marketplace, a radio show produced by American Public Media.

According to Lew, the goal "is to affect the Russian economy", although he acknowledged that the effects of punitive measures are felt by other countries. "When you stop doing business with a country as large as Russia, there are effects outside the boundaries of the country, said the head of Treasury. - There are American companies that are already feeling some of the pinch and there are European businesses that are feeling some of the pinch. And that's the goal: The goal is to affect the Russian economy".

On Friday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a telephone conversation with Russian president Vladimir Putin that the EU countries are forced to think about further sanctions against Russia, as no progress in implementing the Geneva agreements had been reached.

Washington warned that they are ready to impose additional sanctions against Russia, but at the same time pointed out that while the Russia has the ability to avoid them by following the conditions of the Geneva agreements.

"The US president noted that the United States is prepared to impose targeted sanctions to respond to Russia's latest actions", said in a press release of the White House issued after talks between President Barack Obama and the leaders of France, Germany, Great Britain and Italy.

"The leaders agreed to work closely together, and through the G7 and EU, to coordinate additional steps to impose costs on Russia, said in the statement. - The leaders underscored that Russia could still choose a peaceful resolution to the crisis, including by implementing the Geneva accord".
