Iraq: Fighting is getting tougher. Iran promises not to intervene
6/19/2014 3:29:21 PM
Western and Arab media reported on increasing hostilities in Iraq. At least 8 large organizations of armed Iraqi Muslims fight against the forces of the Shiite regime, supported by Iran.
Western media claim that the advance on Baghdad by Sunni groups slowed down. However, in the north-western parts of the country, Shiite troops continue to suffer defeats and continue to retreat.
Some papers write that Ad Dawla al-Islamiyya fi al-Iraq wa ash-Sham/Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) units continued to hold a major oil refinery in Baiji. Russian media reports that ISIL has captured a plant, and that about 300 employees were evacuated from it.
Meanwhile, the so-called "government" of the Shiite regime in Baghdad announced that its troops were able to defeat the groups of ISIL and fully regained control of the oil refinery at Baiji. This statement was made by a representative of "prime minister", a thug named Qassem Atta.
Against this background, the world's largest oil companies, including ExxonMobil and BP, started to evacuate their employees from Iraq. Exxon removes foreign employees from the West Qurna-1 in southern Iraq. BP evacuates workers from Rumaila field in the neighboring region, leaving only the key personnel.
However, the Russian company of Lukoil Overseas officially announced through the Petroleum Information Agency (ANI) that it didn't evacuate and had no intention to do so.
According to recent reports from Iraq, the most fierce fighting is ongoing near the city of Samarra where the Shiites have sent additional troops. They are opposed by local Sunni tribal units who occupied new territories in eastern suburbs of Samarra, capturing one of the checkpoints of the Shiite army (see the video).
Also, it is reported on a fighting in Ramadi where ISIL eliminated up to 50 soldiers of the Baghdad regime.
Sources from Iraq reported that Shiite forces perpetrated mass execution of Muslim hostages in Tal Afar (see photo). The massacre was organized with a purpose of psychological impact on Muslims.
Meanwhile, Western media are concerned about ISIL activity in Iraq. The Financial Times points out that according to Western experts, ISIL receives financial assistance from abroad as well as is taking spoils from the control over oil wells in Iraq.
Western media also reported that the chief of staff of the Iranian army rejected evidence that Tehran had sent troops to Iraq to fight the Mujahideen. Hassan Firuzabadi also noted that cooperation between Iran and America "in fight against militants trying to seize power in Iraq, is impossible, in any case", writes the Iranian agency FARS.
The head of Iran's armed forces, as quoted by the DW, also announced that the Mujahideen in Iraq allegedly had been acting "in union with the United States that seeks to undermine the victory of ...Assad in recent elections".
