RUSSIAN THREAT. Russia starts nuclear exercises on border with Ukraine and NATO countries
6/2/2014 2:12:07 PM
While NATO has reported a partial withdrawal of Russian troops from the border with Ukraine, Russia launched nuclear missiles exercises. Russians announced that the exercises in so-called "Western Military District" will involve training exercises with "Iskander-M" missiles, capable of carrying nuclear warheads. This was reported by Putin's "Defence Ministry." The training will last until June 5.
Russians explained in detail that the missile unit will perform a recce-march, secret deployment of the rocket launchers and taking over the firing positions, as well as doing engineering recce of the technicalities of the area.
There will also be joint actions performed with long-range aviation with the aim "to ensure that conventional cruise missiles, ground and air based, are ready to hit targets at the maximum range". The drones will be used, too.
Missile launcher "Iskander" is designed to hit small and defined targets deep amongst the enemy troops and it can deliver nuclear payload, as well.
Russia has repeatedly stated that it can relocate "Iskander" in occupied Koenigsberg (so-called "Kaliningrad"), as a "response to the deployment in Europe of NATO missile defense system."
Russia's Western Military District borders Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Estonia and Finland.
