England's premier threatens Russia with 'fundamental change of approach'
7/20/2014 11:54:10 AM
England's premier Cameron said more stringent measures should be applied with regard to Russia if Moscow does not change its approach to the situation with the shot-down airliner of Malaysia Airlines.
He pointed out: if it were proven that Russian terrorists were behind the downing of the Malaysian jet, Russia would be to blame for having destabilised a sovereign state, violating its territorial integrity, backing thuggish militias and training and arming them.
Cameron urged Europe to "not compromise its principles ... to make our power, influence and resources count".
At the same time, the premier lamented that many European countries would not want a confrontation with Russia. "We sometimes behave as if we need Russia more than Russia needs us", said Cameron.
"Russia can use this moment to find a path out of this festering, dangerous crisis. I hope it will do so. But if that does not happen then we must respond robustly, writes Cameron. - We must establish the full facts of what happened. But the growing weight of evidence points to a clear conclusion: that MH17 was blown out of the sky by a surface-to-air missile fired from a rebel-held area (or from Russia itself - KC)... If it is the case, then we must be clear what it means: this is a direct result of Russia destabilizing a sovereign state, violating its territorial integrity, backing thuggish militias, and training and arming them. We must turn this moment of outrage into a moment of action".
According to Cameron, "if president Putin does not change his approach on Ukraine, then Europe and the West must fundamentally change our approach to Russia".
On the eve, the European Union expanded criteria for inclusion of Russian companies in the "black list": it can freeze all assets of individuals and companies of the Russian Federation that support Russian terrorists in Ukraine. On the basis of these new criteria, the Commission should prepare before the end of July a list of Russian companies whose assets are to be frozen in Europe.
