Next court session on case of killer Zona took place in Istanbul
7/16/2014 11:33:29 AM

The Turkish press reported that on July 15, Istanbul's Bakirkoy district court held new session in the case of agent of the Russian intelligence, a killer nicknamed Zona (aka Ali Dabuyev, Temur Makhauri, Ruslan Papaskiri), who is accused of killing the representative of the Caucasus Emirate Musa Atayev (aka Ali Osayev, Masol).

The court session was attended by the prosecutor, the accused, his translator, and his lawyer Ufuk Kalkan. As witnesses, the lawyer of Zona brought the wife of the accused Larisa Bokova and his friend Bislan Zaitov. On the part of the complainants, lawyer Omer Yuzgul was present.

Lawyer Kalkan insisted that he had documents that refuted accusations of Zona. He repeated the version of the defence that, on the day of the murder of Musa Atayev, Zona was in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Mr. Kalkan said that Zona, along with his wife, was visiting the notary on that day to get a permission for his wife to leave for Baku. At the same time, as it turned out, Zona used the passport in the name of Ruslan Timayev.

Further, the court heard the testimony of the wife of Zona. She reported that she had to get permission from the notary to go with children to Baku.

"My husband escorted me and returned home. It was February 26, 2009. The next day, he called me and said that Musa Atayev had been murdered and that he should go to Turkey. On February 28, he called and said that he was not allowed to enter Turkey.

We have always lived in poverty. We constantly had a lot of guests. I spent 13 years in the kitchen. When he was doing paperwork, he used to use one of the surname of our children.

In Georgia, you can change the surname for $ 13. He changed his surname because Russian intelligence services had been after him. My husband was twice a victim of an attempted murder in Georgia.

Now my husband has been charged that he was an agent of Russian special services. For 8.5 years I can not go back to Chechnya and could not go to the funeral of my brother, father and older sister. If he were an agent, why couldn't I go home?" asked the wife of Zona.

Then, as a witness, Bislan Zaitov was heard. He said that he was a citizen of Georgia, and that Zona was his friend and more like a brother. Mr. Zaitov said, "Chechens always use several names", and that he knew Bislan Makhauri as "Ali" and "Zona".

He also insisted on the fact that during the murder of Musa Atayev, "Zona" was in Georgia.

In turn, the defendant's lawyer said that documents are identical to those "Zona" used at the notary office in Tbilisi. "Passport in the name of Ruslan Timayev will be presented to court. The court must take into account thatit is quite difficult to get necessary documents, so please give us the opportunity to prepare them and then present to the court", said lawyer Kalkan.

After hearing the testimonies of the wife and the friend of Zona, the complainants lawyer Omer Yuzgul took a stand.

He stated that the testimony of the wife and the close friend of the accused could not be accepted. Mr. Yuzgul questioned their veracity and once again pointed out at the video proof of the relationship between "Zona and Russian special services. He recalled that the investigation proved that Zona met with Russian KGB agents in Istanbul 3 times and 2 times in Egypt, planning to kill some of the Chechens, and received from them a large sum of money.

The lawyer asked the wife of the accused a number of questions, for instance, why the story of certifying documents at the notary in Tbilisi was published only now and it never had been mentioned before, although a long time passed since then. The wife of Zona refused to answer the questions of the lawyer Yuzgul.

Omer Yuzgul also drew the court's attention to the fact that already the 4th different passport of "Zona had been revealed. The emergence of the new passport of the accused requires a fresh and proper investigation.

In turn, the prosecutor appealed to the court to continue with collection of documents, the arguments set out by the defence and the complainants should be thoroughly investigated and the accused should remain in custody.

The court agreed that it was necessary to ask for new inquires and get the answers from investigation documents, including those from Georgia, recalling that Russia had refused to respond to a request regarding two killers of the FSB - Zharkov and Ayupov, who are closely connected with the case of the killer Zona.

Ultimately, the court decided to keep Zona in custody. The next court hearing will be held on September 16, 2014. By this time, the court should be presented with the examinations of the video recording by surveillance cameras that recorded the moment of the murder of Musa Atayev on February 26, 2014 and the direct killer.
