Pentagon fears of offensive by regular Russian troops against Ukraine
7/10/2014 1:57:47 PM
An official website of the US. Defense Department reported about the impending threat over Ukraine from Russian enemy:
"Days after the Ukrainian government abandoned a ceasefire and began an offensive against pro-Russian forces in the country's east, a senior Defense Department official said today (on Wednesday - KC) that the United States is concerned Russian troops may be preparing a counteroffensive in support of Moscow's separatist allies.
"I think we have to really expect the worst in terms of a Russian response, and that's why we're watching it so closely," Derek Chollet, assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "It's a very dangerous situation".
The Russian army pulls back troops to the border with Ukraine. Now there are about eight battalions. They will be able to cross the border if necessary, said the commander of NATO forces in Europe, US Gen. Philip Breedlove, who is now in Slovenia.
The general also said that Russia continues to support the Russian terrorists in Ukraine (Russia sending them there together with its special gangs - KC).
Russian troops stationed at the border, participate in the transfer of heavy military equipment, spare parts, weapons and soldiers, said Gen. Breedlove.
Meanwhile, The New York Times writes:
"The secretary general of the NATO alliance warned on Tuesday that Russia was playing a "double game" in Ukraine, issuing conciliatory public statements while massing its forces along the border and smuggling arms and equipment to separatists inside eastern Ukraine.
"There's no doubt that Russia is heavily engaged in destabilizing eastern Ukraine, and they continue their activities," said the secretary general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, in an interview shortly after meeting with President Obama at the White House.
Speaking in unusually blunt terms, Mr. Rasmussen, whose term ends in October, warned the West not to be fooled by moderate statements by President Vladimir V. Putin, who he said was trying to fend off another round of economic sanctions.
"Don't make any mistake, it's pure tactics," Mr. Rasmussen said. "He keeps open the option to intervene if necessary".
