Has U.S. become tired of Middle East?
8/6/2014 1:29:53 PM

Now it became clear that the US has pulled the plug on the Middle East. There is a couple of reasons for that, says a Turkish newspaper Hurriyet.

According to the newspaper, the US has its good reasons:

- First of all, the Middle East has lost its former appeal to the United States. America's thirst for oil and gas resources in the region is gradually reduced. This is primarily due to the "shale gas revolution".

Since the early 2000s, the US has actively developed the technology to produce shale gas. Last year, the production volume increased to 245 million cubic meters. And last week, for the first time in 40 years, America carried out first, albeit symbolic, crude oil sales. Thus, the US will soon take a position not as an importer of oil and gas, but also as an exporter.

However, American eyes are fixed on the Asia-Pacific region, as this region, and especially China, is the most successful market of this century, and, consequently, gets much more serious profits. In this regard, the policy of surrounding and controlling China, the strength of which is increasing, is actively pursued.

Another reason is "tiredness of the Middle East". The US experience in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past decade has worn Americans down. And not just American politicians, but the American people, too. According to a survey conducted earlier this year by the research company Pew, isolationalism in the American populace is at its highest level in half a century.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon's position, namely that of the US Army and Department of Defense, is becoming more severe. All of the current senior generals personally served in Iraq or Afghanistan. Therefore, they need only to hear the word "Middle East" to find their hair rising up.

Another factor is the public opinion in the Middle East. Now no one will argue with the fact that the interference in the region is further inflaming a strong anti-American sentiment and leading to further escalation of the crisis.

The last of the factors mentioned by the newspaper is associated with gradually expanding disagreements between the US and its allies in the region. The main threat to old allies of Washington - "Israel", Egypt, and all the Gulf countries, especially Saudi Arabia - is Iran.

However, the US has been taking firm steps to move forward in the development of allied relations with Iran.

As for "Islamism", the United States, according to the Turkish newspaper, has somewhat stopped perceiving it as a threat. Although the United States did not see as the negotiating parties organizations such as Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood, Washington separates them from "radical Islam". And its above-mentioned allies consider these organizations as their enemies.

This contradiction is especially evident when the Americans were in favour of a cease-fire in Gaza. Thus, the US turned their backs on Egypt and "Israel". Through the mediation by Turkey and Qatar, the US opened the door to Hamas. This may mean that in the near future, the US will change its strategy towards these organizations.

A particular problem is the fact that Washington allies cannot reconcile their own differences between them. New ideas about who is a friend and who is a foe, demand from the United States to build cooperation with other countries in various conflicts. US differences with its allies and between the allies often create many hesitations and doubts in Washington. This prevents the creation of strong unions.

As a consequence, the United States is moving away from the region. This maneuver of a gradual departure was summed up by president Obama in a speech at the US Military Academy West Point this May: "Just because we have the best hammer does not mean that every problem is a nail".

According to the newspaper, the new US strategy, now called "Regional problems", will be entrusted to the countries of the region. And here is an important role for Turkey to play too.
