Senators demand U.S. to arm Ukraine
9/1/2014 11:19:26 AM

US senators urge Obama to provide arms to Ukraine in order to enable them to "fight against the Russian invasion".

Robert Menendez, the head of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, said that Putin should "pay for the aggression", according to the BBC News.

Senator John McCain pointed out that it is not about "intervention" but about the "military invasion of Russia".

In an interview with CNN, Menendez, a Senator representing the Democratic Party, said: "We should be providing the Ukrainians with the type of defensive weapons that will impose a cost upon Putin for further aggression".

"This is no longer the question of some rebel separatists, this is a direct invasion by Russia. And we must recognize it as that", said the senator.

According to him, the issue of supplying weapons to Ukraine "may well be on the table" of the President Obama. Senator McCain, in an interview with CBS, said that Putin is "a KGB colonel who wants to restore the Russian empire".

John McCain has demanded to impose strict sanctions on Russia, and then added that it is necessary to provide arms to Ukraine: "Give them the weapons they need. Give them the wherewithal they need. Give them the ability to fight".

Meanwhile, in Ukraine, there are reports of the first collision at sea. Military of Ukraine said that in the Azov Sea its naval boat had been shelled from the shore.

According to witnesses, they saw the smoke on the horizon, and according to some reports, another ship was shot at, as well.

BBC News reports that on the road between Dnepropetrovsk and Mariupol journalists observed the Ukrainian army units, clearly increasing its presence in the region to protect the city from attack by pro-Russian separatists.

There was armoured echelon carrying approximately 20 units of Grad rocket launchers. Armoured vehicles, weapons and military have also been sent to Mariupol. Heavy weaponry and soldiers are being sent in for the defence of the city.

Troops and local residents have been digging trenches, and on the roads put huge barriers to prevent the passage of tanks.
