IRAQ. Iran alarmed by the threat of fall of Baghdad
6/16/2014 2:43:55 PM
According to Western media, on Sunday morning, June 15, groups of Ad Dawla al-Islamiyya fi al-Iraq wa ash-Sham/Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL), together with local Sunni tribes, attacked the town of Tal Afar, about 60 km west of previously liberated Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq. Tal Afar has a predominantly Turkmen population - it was the only city in the province of Nineveh, that has not yet been cleared from Shia regime troops.
Located near the Syrian border, the city was attacked from three sides. On Monday, Shiite troops were driven out of it.
In turn, the Shiite regime in Baghdad announced that it had been conducting an attack on Tikrit, it also was claimed that its forces carried out air attacks on Mosul and Kirkuk neighborhoods.
On the eve, social networks reported conflicting news about the fighting in the town of Taji, which has the largest enemy military base and strategic warehouses with weapons and ammunition (see the video of the base shot from a helicopter in 2009).
Meanwhile, commanders of armed groups of Sunni tribes in Iraq announced the beginning of attack on Baghdad. It was reported by Al-Arabiya.
Confronted with the threat of the fall of Baghdad, Iran stated that it had put its army on alert and ordered it to move to the border with Iraq. Commander of Iranian Army's Ground Forces, Brigadier General Kiumars Heidari, said that the army "was closely following the developments in Iraq, so that we could repel militants in time".
Nevertheless, a general uprising of Muslims against Shiite infidels, led by Iraqi Mujahideen, expanded. In response, the Baghdad regime announced general mobilization of the Shiite population, and urgently started arming loyal militia units.
Earlier, information leaked to the media on sending to Iraq of more than two thousand soldiers of the Rafidite Iranian army. Iranian troops were ordered to fight the Mujahideen.
