EGYPT. Military junta closes mosques en-masse
6/24/2014 1:37:10 AM
The Egyptian city of Alexandria has been overwhelmed by a wave of shutting-down of all mosques. In recent days, the activity was discontinued at more than 900 mosques, according to local sources.
The decision to close the mosques was taken by the military junta and later justified as the mosques were allegedly operating "in violation of government regulations".
However, as pointed out by local sources, the campaign has been directed against mosques and preachers that opposed the military junta.
In addition, the putschists banned 60 imams of the mosques from giving sermons because they had allegedly "no license" authorizing them to call for Islam
One of the leaders of the military junta in Alexandria, a Muhammad Nur, instructed to check the contents of the sermons in all the mosques there.
Earlier, the military junta banned preachers with no special permission from the putschists, to appear near the mosques.
Imams, who call to Islam without the permission of the putschists, could face up to one year in prison and pay a large fine. Punishment may be doubled if the "crime" is repeated.
