G7 threatens Russia with new sanctions
6/5/2014 11:29:20 AM

The leaders of the G7 at a summit in Brussels said they would impose new sanctions on Russia because of its actions in the Ukraine. In a joint statement, G7 leaders condemned Russia for the "continuing violation of the sovereignty of Ukraine", according to Western sources.

This is the first meeting between the leaders of the leading industrialized countries, after they refused format G8 with Russia because of Moscow's annexation of Crimea.

On Wednesday evening, the summit brought together over dinner that preceding the meeting. British Prime Minister David Cameron said that he expects from the G7 strong support for Ukraine and appeal to Russia to seek a diplomatic solution to the conflict, reports news agencies.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned that Russia will face new sanctions if it does not stop its efforts to destabilize the situation in the east of Ukraine.

"We stand ready to intensify targeted sanctions and to consider significant additional restrictive measures to impose further costs on Russia should events so require", said a joint statement by leaders of G7.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said: "We cannot afford a further destabilization in Ukraine".

"We have made clear that we want to continue with our three-step approach - support Ukraine in economic issues, talks with Russia, and should there no progress on all those issues... the possibility of sanctions, tougher sanctions, remains on the table", Merkel said.

Earlier, US President Barack Obama during his visit to Poland stated that he condemns the "dark tactics" and "aggression" of Russia in the east of Ukraine. According to him, further provocations by Moscow would only mean continued isolation.

Obama's visit to Poland is timed to the 25th anniversary of the end of the communist era in the history of this country.

"After investing so much blood and treasure to bring Europe together, how can we allow the dark tactics of the 20th century to define this new century?", Obama said in his speech to the Poles in Warsaw.

He reiterated that the United States does not accept the annexation of Crimea by the Russian authorities.

Obama also pledged strong support for all NATO members, who feel threatened by Russia.
