Obama refuses to meet importunate KGB major Putin, but meets Crimean Tatars
6/1/2014 1:19:57 PM
According to reports by Western agencies, during his voyage to Europe, Obama will meet representatives of Crimean Tatars, according to a briefing by Obama's adviser for strategic communications, Ben Rhodes.
The meeting will be held to show American solidarity with Crimean Tatars and emphasize that the Obama's country does not accept Russia's annexation of Crimea.
On June 4, Obama also meet the new president of Ukraine Poroshenko in Warsaw.
Representatives of the Crimean Tatars were invited to Warsaw to meet Obama together with the leaders of Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and Slovakia.
The meeting will take place during Poland's celebration of 25 year anniversary of the victory of the Solidarity movement, which led to free elections to Polish parliament.
Responding to a question, Rhodes also said Obama was "very much concerned about the rights of Crimean Tatars" and "gravely concerned about reports that they are not having their basic human rights respected; the restrictions that have been placed on some of their leaders, for instance".
Rhodes stressed that Obama would not discuss the issue of Crimean Tatars with Putin as Obama would not meet the Russian leader, a KGB major. Of course, Rhodes said, they will be at a seaside in France at the same place and the same dinner, but it is not a meeting (the complete script of the press conference Rhodes is on this link).
Since Crimea's annexation by Russia, a global group, the United nations, also documented cases of physical harassment, restrictions on Crimean Tatar media, fears of religious persecution among practicing Muslims, and a threat by the Crimean prosecutor that the work of the parliament of the Crimean Tatars may be declared illegal and terminated", report The AP and AFP.
Obama intends to stay on June 3-4 in Warsaw, and June 4-5 in Brussels, where he meets the leaders of the G7. On the evening of June 5, he will have a sleep-over in Paris, after dining alone with his French counterpart, and then, on June 6, he will have a relaxing day on a French sea beach, where visits a show, also visited by Putin. But Obama is not going to meet his Russian counterpart.
Obama will make a speech at the show praising the "generation of 9/11" for its participation in the War on Islam. Without meeting the importunate Russian KGB major, Obama will attend a gala dinner at his French colleague's place, still ignoring major Putin there. And then Obama will leave the same day for Washington.
