Russian cyber-attack on one NATO country now considered as an attack on the whole NATO
7/2/2014 1:22:05 PM

A Warsaw paper, Gazeta Wyborcza, writes that the NATO is adapting to realities of 21-century wars. According to the latest NATO security policy doctrine, a cyber-attack on any NATO member state will be henceforth regarded as an attack on all.

This opens a way to collective self-defense as in case of a conventional military attack, explained the practical impact of the new doctrine provisions Jamie Shea, a spokesman for the NATO.

- All major international crises that have recently occurred - in Georgia, Syria, Ukraine - take place mainly in digital space using advanced techniques and technologies - Shea added.

In accordance with the new provisions of the doctrine, an attack on the Digital Alliance will be henceforth treated in accordance with Article 5 of the Trans-Atlantic Treaty, which states that "an armed attack against one or more NATO countries in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against the NATO as a whole".

It is to be recalled that in 2007, Russia conducted cyber-attacks against NATO's Estonia, and in 2013 - against NATO's Lithuania.
